What to do when they aren't hiring

Some analysts point to a vicious cycle: The economy's uneven recovery has itself factored into companies' reluctance to hire, with employers hesitant to increase overhead by way of adding to payrolls. Others suggest that the gap between job availability and employers' willingness to hire indicates a discrepancy between what workers want and what companies are offering.

John Challenger, CEO of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said that many of his clients have been unwilling to accept positions in which they would be "underemployed."

"There may just be a wage gap," he says. "Companies may not just feel pressure to raise their wages. We've seen candidates not interested in jobs at some of the levels companies are offering jobs at."

Network marketing, also known as multilevel marketing, or MLM, appeals to people for the following reasons:

1. Most people find the business opportunity an alluring way to make ends meet, particularly when earnings are cut back, they lose a job or they're trying to launch a new business.
2. Some people are so turned on by a product (like one that enabled them to lose weight or restore their health) that they want to share it with others.
3. Some people imagine MLM as a quick and low-cost way to get rich.

The fact is, few people get rich; some make a part-time income. Those who do best work hard, stick with it, and aren't turned off by the evangelism involved in getting others to try something or join their selling organization, which is called a downline or team.  The ones that stick with it are successful, write their own ticket and work a 4 year plan and not the 40 year career.

Eat chocolate for health or wealth ? You choose.

Chocolate has been in the news lately for its health properties as well as being a commodity that  9 of 10 people love and over a billion people eat everyday.  More people eat chocolate than people drink coffee. 

"It's actually good for your heart and also good for your blood pressure," says Valentine Yanchou Njike, MD, MPH, of the Yale Griffin Prevention Research Center, who has researched cocoa's effect on blood vessel function. Researchers have also found that phytochemicals in cocoa, which is used to make chocolate, may improve blood vessel function, slow blood clotting, improve insulin resistance and have protective effects against cancer. And even though the labels say chocolate contains saturated fat, it's actually the kind of fat (called stearic acid) that has little effect on your cholesterol levels.

Trend-watching firm Datamonitor named chocolate "the new coffee" in a list of the top 10 trends to watch. But that's not all: Studies have come out demonstrating the health benefits of flavanoids often contained in dark chocolate. Sales are soaring, and entrepreneurial opportunities are rich with promise. "Chocolate is more popular today than ever before," says Joan Steuer, founder and president of Chocolate Marketing LLC, a Los Angeles consulting firm that specializes in strategic forecasting and tracking trends in the chocolate industry. So stop drooling and take a bite of the action. Dark, artisanal, organic, socially responsible and nutraceutically enhanced chocolates are especially hot varieties, according to Steuer. Opportunities also exist in chocolate cafes, chocolate fountains and chocolate education, such as tastings. And you can't go wrong with basics like chocolate snacks or a shelf-stable ganache. Says Steuer, "The world of chocolate is wide open for anyone to succeed if they take the right steps."
